History of the music press

How has the internet changed the music press?

The decrease in sales in magazines is due to many things including increase in the development of social media, technology and the internet.
  • For example social media. Social media offers free promotion, there is no need to pay for advertisements, therefore companies wanting to advertise themselves would save themselves money by doing it on social media like Facebook, Instagram or by creating their own websites online.
  • Youtube, there is no need to wait for the bilboard charts or find trending music where you can find it immediately on music apps or websites such as youtube. These provide the top charts for free to listen to and also allows you to discover new music fast and easily.
  • The internet is constantly updated with dates, events and news, so by the time it was to be included in a magazine it would no longer be an 'exclusive' as many people having looked at the internet would have already seen it.
  • Mobile phones are much easier to use in order to find information fast and for free online instead of having to wait or go to the shops to buy a magazine.
  • Companies would rather pay slightly bigger sums of money to have themselves advertised to a much wider audience- e.g. be advertised on television which would be seen by millions instead of paying for advertisements in magazines which would be seen by a few hundred thousand.
